Conscious Leadership:
Mentoring and Sponsoring Across Differences (CL0613)

The numbers of women and minorities graduating from law schools and beginning employment in the most prestigious and influential law firms have been represented in far higher numbers than the numbers of women and minorities in leadership roles within these same law firms.  As the leadership of these firms remains predominantly male with women accounting for fewer than 20% of equity partners and minorities accounting for less than 4%, the need for these leaders to mentor and sponsor across racial, ethnic, gender and other differences continues to grow in importance.

The course will bring together substantive research and findings from many disciplines to focus primarily on the ways in which this research impacts legal workplaces and how attorneys can actively identify and address bias as they relate to professional mentoring/sponsorship and the promotion of an inclusive and diverse workforce. Participants will develop tools that contribute to an active and effective mentorship relationship and a deeper awareness of bias in order to address unconscious miscommunications and misconceptions in the practice of law.
